...Is that I think I should buy a fleet of B13 Sentra's and drive nothing else for the rest of my life. And that I should never, ever ever ever, buy an Audi, Porsche, Jag, Mini, Lumina, F250 or higher, Outback, Alltrac, CVCC, Camaro, Allroad (I know I said Audi) or any number of other cars unless I feel like passing along my money to someone else to disassemble my car piece by piece....

I knew about some of these, but I never realized just how nightmarish some of these cars are... This is when I thank my stars that the cars I've done major maintenance on have been relatively simple: B13 Sentra, '85 and '88 Camry, '85 Isuzu P'up (pre-non-interference engine - timing belt broke, had to rebuild engine, made it a non-interference engine =)... and then the Mazda 626, which was semi-evil, but was traded in before I could let it really drive me mad.
But back to the B13 Sentra, that thing was a BREEZE to work on, loads of space, easy access to every system... relatively intuitive to figure out... Now if only I could figure out a way to import a Nissan Tsuru...

Yeah, the 911 engine bay is a nightmare.

As a revision, I'd like to say that not all Subarus are the headache ones.
Typically that tag is reserved for the non-turbo Subies. Do a big of digging on the differences between open deck heads vs semi-open decks, and you'll find that the turbo Subarus use a semi-open deck which has fared much better in terms of HG replacement.
Alas, no Subaru except for the old SOHC NA engines were any good at spark plug ease, and any 4-cylinder Subaru uses a timing belt whereas the H6 uses a timing chain that should never need replacement.
That being said, it only took me 3 hours to get 4 sparkplugs changed on my LGT... that was one time... the other time it took me all night...
Hopefully Subaru has fixed their maintainability and reliability on the HG front with their new FA20/FB20

Damn... I had no idea... I'm generally used to things like the cars I listed above, or the Wrangler or Rav4... where things are simple. I understand some of why the Subie's are more difficult by design. But... design for maintenance should absolutely be part of auto design (with exceptions for mission specific profiles). And some of the cars here seem to fly in the face of that (at least the Audi's seem to have some pretty simple approaches to disassembly, unlike my 2000 New Beetle, which... well...).

Timing belt isn't that difficult. Just take the front bumper off and you have full access. The spark plugs need a bit of cheating and experience, but I agree that somebody should've thought of an easier way to get at those. And HG failure is something that should've been taken into account from the factory- our 03 Impreza needed it's 4th HG at 93k miles (1 from the factory, 2 and 3 under warranty, 4 out of warranty). Next time I start seeing green stuff leaking onto my driveway it's going up for sale. Utterly ridiculous
